Regasification terminals

Summary

  • As of April 2024 world regasification infrastructure includes 216 terminals with aggregate capacity 1 billion tons of LNG per year. It’s 2.2 times bigger than world liquefaction capacity.

  • Top countries by national regasification capacities are Japan, South Korea anc China. They jointly have half of world capacities and this share will grow in the next two years.

  • Top terminals by nameplate capacities are Incheon (55 MTPA), Pyeongtaek LNG (41 MTPA) - both of South Korea - and Japanese Sodegaura (29 MTPA).

  • 113 MTPA new capacities are in construction stage (+11% to current capacities). Share of China ins dominate in newbuilds.

Current capacity

East Asian countries Japan, China and South Korea are leaders for current national regasification capacity. China is actively building new regasification terminals nowadays and could become number one countries in terms of regasification capacity by 2025.

India is number four well behind top three countries. As Indian power generation still coal-based, LNG import into India and related infrastructure has potential fo significant growth.

Spain has to rely on LNG import to significant extent, but as the market matures and stabilizes there is little chance for its future growth.

USA has a lot of historic LNG import facilities, but now they have been rebuild as LNG export liquefaction plants and have no or little LNG import.

Incheon regasification terminal located in Seoul neighbourhood is the world’s largest regasification terminal with nameplate capacity 54.4. MTPA. It started operation in 1996, owned and operated by Korean Gas Corporation (KOGAS), which owns the entire South Korean transmission network and has a monopoly on wholesale gas sales in South Korea.

The second largest is Pyeongtaek LNG terminal, also in South Korea. It started operations in 1986 and also owned by KOGAS. After extentions its capacity counts 41 MTPA.

The third largest is Sodegaura terminal in Chiba, Japan. It started operations and is owned by Tokyo Electric Power Co Holdings Inc (50%); Tokyo Gas Co Ltd (50%).

Newbuilds

China is the world leader in construction of new regasification terminals. Key constructions take place in China: 15 terminals in total with overall nameplate capacity 59 MTPA. Germany, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland and South Korea in total has 8 planned regasification terminals with aggregate nameplate capacity 31 MTPA.

2023 is the record year in terms of regasafication capacities put into operation - 151.1 MTPA of new capacity, of which 67.8 MTPA has been build by China and 23 MTPA - by India and 10 MTPA by Philippines.
