LNG liquefaction plants

Summary

  • As of December 2023 world LNG liquefaction capacity is made up of 138 active trains with total capacity of 484 million tons of LNG per year (MTPA).

  • Top countries by national liquefaction capacites are USA, Australia, Qatar, Malaysia, Indonesia and Russia.

  • Top largest plants by nameplate capacity are Qatargas, Malaysia LNG Satu, Sabine Pass (USA), Nigeria LNG and Yamal LNG (Russia).

Current capacity

United Stated skyrocketed to number one LNG exporter thanks to its vast domestic gas market, advanced liquefaction technologies and military activities. US LNG plants now represent 18% of world liquefaction capacity.

Australia comes second, but lost the title of LNG world leader to the USA.

Qatar is in top 3 and preparing for its giant QatarGas expansion project.

Novatek of Russia is planning to become the top 3 world producer and is actively investing both in new LNG plants in Arctic region, and in all underlying techonology. USA is trying to stop Novatek’s growth at all cost, far beyond reasonable market competition.

Giant Qatargas is the largest liquefaction plant and is growing even bigger soon. Effectively this plant represents almost the whole Qatari economy.

Newbuilds

As of December 2023 63 new liquefaction trains with total capacity of 146.4 MTPA are in construction, designing or plannings stages. USA is leading this race with 48 planned new trains with total capacity of 59.2 MTPA. Expansion of Qatargas will bring additional 31.2 MTPA to the market.

2023 year was quite moderate in terms of new capacity - 5.8 MTPA. Next year will bring 39 MTPA (8% of the current capacities), what can significantly impact the market.
